Is Singleness a Curse?

Tired of being the bridesmaid and never the bride? Dreading the day your best bro tells you he’s ready to pop the question? There’s a way to end the loneliness, fear and feeling of worthlessness.  It’s free, no online sign-up, and we can enjoy it every day.

The way to end our fear of being single is by changing our perspective on it.

How To Embrace Singleness As A Gift

Being single is a gift from God that enables us to be completely devoted to Him, with no strings attached. In Jeremiah 32:33-34, we see that when God's people were living in the land God promised them, they took their eyes off of Him, and placed them on idols, which led to them being in slavery.

When we're focused on why we're single rather than serving God, being in a relationship becomes an idol. Jeremiah 32:38-39 says, “They will be my people, and I will be their God. I will give them singleness of heart and action, so that they will always fear me and that all will then go well for them and for their children after them.” If we change our perspective on being single to being devoted to God while single, He has so much more for us!

1. Change Your Perspective

Being pursued feels good. But the high we get from hearing “I love you” or “You’re beautiful” doesn’t quench the longing in our hearts. Only God fulfills our need to feel valuable, beautiful and accepted.

The way to end our fear of being single is by changing our perspective on it.

In Jeremiah 32:40, God said He was going to make an everlasting covenant (promise) with His people (us). The way we change our perspective is by spending more time with the one who makes promises that never fail and always come true. Jesus died in pursuit of us, so our only response is to give Him all of ourselves. When we give Him our singleness, He will give us a heart fully surrendered to Him.

2. Take Action And Know You’re Not Alone

When your friends are dating and getting married, you begin to think: "Why hasn't someone pursued me?" Or in my case, "I need to ask someone out."

My identity as a single man was wrapped up in what others were doing and what others thought of me. I wasn't ready to pursue or date anyone. Through God calling the girl I wanted to pursue to move away and a friend giving messages on relationships, I realized that my identity was wrapped up in girls and my friends.

If all you can think about is being with someone and what others think about you, take a step back and see what God has to say. Maybe, like me, your next step is to take a break from dating. It will be challenging, but only when our hearts are fully devoted to Jesus will our perspectives on singleness change. That’s when we’ll see the single season of life as a blessing, not a curse.
