8 practical ways loving parents put their marriage first

Parenting is hard work. It’s the job we never take a vacation from and the role we rarely get respect for. But as we love our kids and try our best to raise them, we get a small glimpse into what it’s like for our heavenly Father to parent us.

Throughout the Bible, God gives us instructions on how to raise our children. Bullet Point Parenting shares God’s instructions on parenting and practical ways to put it into action.

"That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24).

How do I make sure my relationship with my spouse comes before my relationship with the kids?

  • Keep dating each other.
  • Take 15 minutes of every day for “mom and dad” time. This could be first thing in the morning or right when your spouse comes home. Let the kids play on their own, and don’t tolerate interruptions.
  • Kiss your spouse before you kiss your kids. After all he or she loved you first!
  • Show affection to each other, and tell your kids that you love your spouse the most. This blesses your spouse and has a calming affect on your children.
  • Say something nice about your spouse every day.
  • Don’t side against your spouse in front of the kids. Resolve your issues behind closed doors.
  • Give your kids a bedtime so you and your spouse can have time alone before bed.
  • Get away overnight or for the weekend four times a year. Every married couple needs time together without the kids.
