The enemy’s plan for your marriage

The enemy has big plans for your marriage. His playbook is overflowing with ideas to take your marriage to another level.

Satan's Advice for Your Marriage

1. Keep your options open.

Did you really think you could stay married to the same person?  Forever? Boring! If you’ve been married more than ten minutes, it’s probably time to spice things up. I love social media. It’s never been so easy to rekindle a spark from your past. In moments you can search for an old “friend,” peruse their flawless beach photos, send a message, and before you know it you’re back at Spring Break! It’s free, fabulous, and nobody gets hurt.

I know, I know the Bible says, “... With persuasive words she led him astray; she seduced him with her smooth talk. All at once he followed her like an ox going to the slaughter, like a deer stepping into a noose...”  (Proverbs 7:21-22)

Don’t you hate it when people take a verse about animals and try to spin it to be about people? When a smoking hot image comes to mind--trust me, my team of experts put it there. You’re welcome.

2. Never disconnect.

You are too important to be out of touch for an hour. Why waste time talking when you can spend date night tweeting about your delicious meal? There’s nothing more romantic than candlelight, grilled salmon, and the soft glow of your iPhone. Your spouse knows you love them. You told them at the wedding, didn’t you?

3. Know your exit strategy.

Divorce is an excellent option. Be sure to drop the “D” word casually in conversation. Remember marriage is like leasing a car. Try it out for a while, then trade it in for a newer, faster, shinier model.

4. Be the No. 1 critic.

The last thing you want is an overconfident, arrogant spouse. Never miss an opportunity to criticize them, especially when you’re out in public. Get the kids in on the fun. Their other parent is not perfect. Make sure the kids know it. I’m sure you’ve heard that overused Corinthians “love” passage. Why do we have to hear the same sappy ranting over and over at weddings? Love is patient and kind? Love does not dishonor others? Love keeps no record of wrongs? Whatever.

The Truth Every Married Couple Needs to Know

Seriously, the enemy is a liar; and his plans are sneaky and destructive. The best way to drown out his lies is to replace them with the truth. The truth is God loves marriage, and He created it to last forever. Read 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 together. Then ask yourself, would you:

  • Commit to a regular date night? Leave stressful topics and chaotic schedules at home. Unplug technology.

  • Tell your spouse three things you love and respect about them? Tell other people. Tell the kids.

  • Pray for your spouse and your marriage?

  • Remember what made you fall in love in the first place? Talk about those things often.
