Six reasons to join in singing every Sunday

Every gathering at NewSpring includes a message and music. The message teaches us more about Jesus and challenges us to follow Him. But what is the music for?

Music is a way to worship God. Psalm 69:30-31 says, "I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving. This will please the Lord more than an ox, more than a bull with its horns and hooves."

Worship is a response to how good something is. When we rave about how talented a football team is or how much we enjoy the food at our favorite restaurant, we’re telling others how much that thing means to us. In the same way, worshipping God is expressing how much He means to us.

Worship is not always singing, and singing is not always worship. Our whole lives should be living examples of worship to God. However, singing to Jesus is an essential part of worshipping Him.

Six Reasons to Sing

1. God is great.

God is good to us. He took us from spiritual death to fully alive. Even in the most challenging circumstances, we have a lot to be grateful for. Everyone has a voice, so we can all sing thanks to Him (Psalm 150:1-6).

2. God tells us to sing.

God wants us to express joy (Psalm 100:1-2). No matter how beautiful or terrible we think our voices sound, God tells us throughout the Bible to sing. Singing is less about performing for Jesus and more about our willingness to obey Him.

3. Singing is a way to respond to God together.

Gathering and singing together is a unique way to celebrate who God is and encourage each other to look to Jesus (Ephesians 5:19, Psalm 22:22). Following Jesus is not a solo activity and neither is worshipping Him.

4. Singing is a public way to show how great God is.

By singing to Jesus, we are expressing thanks to Him that people will overhear (Psalm 105:1-3). Through worship, our focus is placed on Jesus so others look to Him, too. Singing is a way to communicate the amazing things God does.

We follow a creative God, and He loves when we worship Him creatively.

5. God sings over us.

He is so happy about us that He rejoices by singing over us (Zephaniah 3:17). If God is that happy to be with us, how joyful can we be that He is with us and for us?

6. God wants new songs.

We follow a creative God, and He loves when we worship Him creatively. He wants us to sing new songs to Him so we can celebrate all the new ways He changes our lives (Isaiah 42:10-12).

Don’t be afraid to sing loud in response to Jesus, whether it’s on a Sunday, with a cranked up car stereo Monday morning, or at home with your family during the week.
