Session 7

You Are Under Attack

From 1 Peter: A 20-Day Devotional

Contrary to what most people believe, when we commit to following Jesus, life does not become a walk in the park. When we follow Jesus, we are held to a higher standard, which can make life tough at times. The good news is that those tough times can be what makes us more like Jesus and ultimately, brings us the everlasting joy our souls desperately want.

In 1 Peter 5:8, Peter tells us to be self controlled and alert because “your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” When you become a Christian, you gain an enemy who is tricky and deceitful. Satan is threatened by the power of Jesus within you. Peter goes on to say that if we resist Satan and stand firm in faith, God will “restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast” (1 Peter 5:10b).

The choice is ours. We can either stand firm or be devoured. The Bible encourages us to remember that while we are resisting Satan, we are not alone. Christians all over the world are enduring similar tough times. One of the best ways to defeat Satan is to surround ourselves with people who love Jesus. We really can’t do life alone.

Reflect:

  • What’s one way Satan has deceived you in the past?
  • Is there are an area of your life where you are more susceptible to believing Satan’s lies? What is it about that situation that leaves you open to attack?
  • Who in your life can you turn to when you know you’ve fallen into Satan’s trap? If the answer is no one, your next step might be joining a NewSpring Group. Find out more here.
