Session 30

It’s not too late to change

From 1 Samuel: A 6-Week Devotional

“I told you so” moments are no fun if you are on the receiving end. We see one of these moments in 1 Samuel when the Israelites come to terms with how they have sinned. Samuel warned the people many times to turn from their ways, but they did not listen to him.

At this point, Samuel could have told the Israelites it was too late, or fussed at them for not heeding his warnings. But, he didn’t. Samuel’s words to the Israelites are overflowing with grace. He acknowledges that they are correct in realizing their sin but makes it clear that they are to move forward in grace instead of standing still in guilt.

God does not abandon us when we make mistakes. God finds happiness in taking care of His children. He is not looking for opportunities to make us suffer for the wrong things we do. Instead, He lovingly corrects us the way Samuel corrected Israel.

God does not abandon us when we make mistakes.

Even when we run from God, He remains faithful (2 Timothy 2:13). When we turn from our sins and come back to God, He accepts us with open arms and gracious instruction.

Samuel told the Israelites not to turn back to the idols they had previously worshipped because the idols could not help or rescue them. God asks us not to go in certain directions because He knows what is best for us, and He knows true salvation comes from Jesus, not idols. Just as a shepherd wants to protect his sheep, God wants to protect those who belong to Him (Isaiah 40:11).

Samuel shows us a wonderful picture of grace and conviction. Grace says, “I forgive you,” and conviction says, “ What you did was wrong, let’s go this direction now.”

Reflect:

  • What is one way God has shown you grace when you didn't deserve it?
  • Is there any sin you need to ask forgiveness for, turn away from, and then move forward?
  • Is there anyone you need to show grace to today?
