Session 22

How to know who to listen to

From 2 Chronicles: A 28-Day Devotional

In the 1970s, the average person was exposed to around 500 ads a day. Today, we’re exposed to more like 5,000 ads a day (via CBS News).  With so many conflicting messages, how can we decipher which ones to trust?

The best way to find truth amid the clutter is to read the Bible and trust God's promises.

In 2 Chronicles 13, King Abijah did something peculiar before the battle began. Standing on the battlefield outnumbered, Abijah claimed the promises of God aloud for all to hear. The key to the battle wasn’t in the strength of either side's forces, but in Judah trusting God.

Like Abijah, we will have days when we have to trust what we know of God, regardless of our circumstances. And sometimes, we have to preach God’s truth to ourselves over and over until we believe it in our hearts.

For example, when we're lonely and afraid, God promises never to leave or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31). When we feel overwhelmed, God tells us His grace and His strength are all we need (2 Corinthians 12:9). When we face struggles, we find hope in knowing God wants immeasurably more for us than we could possibly ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).

Focusing on who God is and following through on what He’s called us to will always be challenging. But, choosing to believe God’s promises gives us the courage to move forward.

Reflect:

  • With so many influences directing your decisions each day, how do you know what to believe?
  • Is there anything you know God has called you to that seems to go against popular wisdom?
  • What’s one area of your life where you struggle to believe God’s promises? Try memorizing a verse you can pray on days when God’s promises are particularly hard to believe.
