Session 4

Jesus brings us into the light

From Colossians: A 28-Day Devotional

Often, we stroll through life without a care in the world, consumed with ourselves and blind to the darkness around us. We fail to recognize the imminent danger. We wander not knowing we’re lost.

God, in His great love for us, doesn’t leave us in the dark. Colossians 1:13-14 says, "he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."

We didn’t know what we didn’t know. Then God turned on the light. He showed us who we are and gave us a way to become who we were always meant to be — His family.

Meeting Jesus is like flipping on the overhead light. After hours in a dim room, your eyes adjust. You don’t realize what you can see until light floods the space, revealing cracks that were previously hidden and coffee stains speckled across the carpet.

You can’t go back to seeing things as they were before. Because even if you cut the light off, you know the cracks and coffee stains are there.

Likewise, Jesus reveals who God is. And once we see that there’s no going back. In Jesus, the invisible becomes visible. He answers the question, "What if God were one of us?" and shows us a new way to live.

The Message says it this way, "We look at this Son and see God’s original purpose in everything created" (Colossians 1:15, MSG).

Reflect:

  • What is one area of your life that is full of Jesus’s light? How did it get this way?
  • Is there an attitude or habit you keep hidden in the dark? If so, what is one way you can bring it to the light?
