Session 20

Is peace really possible?

From Colossians: A 28-Day Devotional

Young and old, married and single, we all long for peace. The problem is that we’re often looking for peace in all the wrong places.

We tell ourselves that when we finish this class or make the next pay grade, life will settle down. On the other side of where we are now, we’ll find peace.

But has that ever been the case? We rarely, if ever, experience a drama-free day.

Colossians reminds us that peace isn’t tied to our circumstances. Peace comes from a person, and His name is Jesus. When the peace of Christ rules in our hearts, we can experience peace amid the drama.

Many things can numb an unsettled heart, but only Jesus brings real, lasting peace. That’s why we sing and read the Bible. These practices are more than good things to do. They remind us of what’s true.

"Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts" (Colossians 3:16).

As we sing, read, and pray, we remember who we are and who God is. We reflect on what He has done and promises to do. Those truths settle our hearts in ways escapism and getting to the next big thing never will.

Reflect:

  • What is one area of your life where you need Jesus to bring you peace?
  • Who do you look to for wisdom when life gets crazy?
  • What are three things you can be thankful for right now? Write them down and take a few minutes today to thank God for what He’s doing in your life.
