Session 24

Rebekah

From Eve & Adam: 30-Day Bible Study

Genesis 27 tells the whole story of how Rebekah helped Jacob steal Esau’s blessing. Rebekah was the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau.  At the end of Isaac’s life he was preparing to pray a blessing over his older son, Esau, but Rebekah overheard him and created a plan for Jacob, the younger son, to deceive Isaac to get the blessing instead. The Lord had already spoken to Rebekah while she was pregnant and told her “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” (Genesis 25:23)

Rebekah knew God’s plan for her sons, but took things into her own hands to make sure that God’s plan came true. The Bible is filled with God’s promises for us including John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” So many times we know God has a plan for our lives, but simply don’t trust him enough to get us there. God is trustworthy, and anytime we step outside of His commands, dysfunction is the result. Jacob and Esau remained estranged from each other for years after this event.

1. Do you believe God’s promises for your own life? (He loves you (Romans 5:8), He wants what’s best for you (John 10:10), He has a plan for you…a good plan (Jeremiah 29:11))

2. What ways are you taking things into your own hands instead of trusting God to fulfill them?
