Session 6

You’re an heir

From Galatians: An 11-Day Devotional

What does it mean to go from a slave to a child of God? What does it mean to go from hopeless to hopeful? What does it mean to go from having nothing to having access to all you'll ever need? Asking Jesus into our lives is what makes that transition. When we give our lives to Jesus, we go from being another sinner to an heir of God. And from that we gain access to all of His resources.

So you are no longer a slave, but a son, and if a son, then an heir through God.

Being a child of God changes our view of our circumstances. We no longer have to wonder where our next meal will come from. Because as God’s heir, we have access to all of His resources. We no longer have to wonder where we’ll get our next shirt because the one we have now is rags. According to Galatians 4, we have access to everything that belongs to God, and like a good Father, He provides.

In the same way, when we’re struggling — whether it be through a divorce, an abusive relationship, a recurring sin, or anything else — we can get through it because God provides, and we are his heirs. As children of God, we can rest assured that each test of faith will only add to our testimonies.

Reflect:

  • What’s one benefit of being the daughter or son of a King?
  • How does it change the way you see your life to think of yourself as the son or daughter of a King?
  • What’s one area of your life where you need to trust God to provide?
