Session 9

God doesn’t lie

From Genesis: A 7-Week Devotional

Read

Genesis 15

Have you ever felt lost, alone or afraid?

Maybe a job loss has you scared about the future. Maybe strain in your marriage has you feeling alone in what should be a partnership. Maybe an overbooked schedule has you running in a million directions but getting nowhere.

When we feel lost, alone, or afraid, God’s prosperous plans seem impossible, and it’s easy to wonder: Are His promises even true?

If anyone knows how that feels, it’s Abram. God promised to bring many nations out of Abram’s family, but here he was: old and still childless. But in Genesis 15:1, God reassures Abram in a vision saying, "Do not be afraid, I am your shield, your very great reward."

In this verse, God reminds Abram, and us, of two important facts about who He is:

1. God is our shield. A shield protects at all costs. It defends us from danger and protects us from risk. Because God is our shield, we don't have to be afraid.

2. God is our great reward. Our ultimate gift. When we believe in Him, we have nothing to fear. No reason to feel alone. No way to be lost. For in Him we are found.

When you feel lost, alone or afraid, rest assured that God's promises are true. He doesn't lie. He is with us through the difficult times. And like Abram, choosing to believe demonstrates our faith—a sincere inner confidence of knowing we are safe and secure in God's Word (Proverbs 30:5).

Reflect:

  • What’s one way you need God to protect you today?
  • Is there any area of life where you feel lost, lonely, or afraid? How does reading the Bible and seeing God’s character increase your faith?
