Session 19

How to never be hungry again

From Chasing Purpose: A 27-Day Devotional

As soon as the “Coming Soon” sign went up, people started talking. Then the day came. Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers opened, and people lined up around the building and down the street to get a taste of the latest fast food burgers in town.

When we’re excited about a restaurant, it shows. We talk about it. We wait in line for it. We’ll drive a little further to experience it. All that for food that we’ll enjoy but that won’t satisfy our hunger for more than a few hours.

Isaiah 55:1-6 describes a different kind of food. Free food, good food that will fill us long term. This is better than a steakburger. This is spiritual food that leads to eternal life, and the way to this feast is through a relationship with Jesus.

Jesus said as much in His time on earth. He meets a woman at a well and tells her, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:13-14).

On the last and greatest day of a festival, Jesus gets up and announces, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them” (John 7:37-38).

Jesus issues an open invitation to know what it means to be truly satisfied: “Come to me.” We chase purpose in many ways, but what if living in our purpose is as simple as putting the attitude we have about sharing our favorite restaurants toward sharing our faith?

When you tell someone you’ve found the best BBQ in town, what do you tell the doubters? “Come and see.” That’s the message of every Christian today.

Our shared purpose is to know Jesus and make Him known. That was Jesus’ prayer for the church, and it’s what He’s calling each of us to today (‭‭John‬ ‭17:3).

Reflect:

  • What helps you to know Jesus?
  • What’s one way you can help make Jesus known?
