Session 6

How mercy points us in the right direction

From Jude: A 7-Day Devotional

When was the last time you were lost in a dark, unfamiliar place? When disorientation and fear leave us feeling helpless, asking for help is the only way to find our way.

Asking for help takes courage and most of us expect one of two reactions. Will we be condemned for getting ourselves into this situation in the first place? Or, will the person respond with compassion and lead us to the right destination?

When we’re lost, condemnation is not what we need. What we need is direction. This is also true for those who are lost spiritually.

When someone is spiritually disoriented, condemnation only makes them feel more hopeless. Jude 1:22 tells us to be merciful to those who doubt. Compassion is what rescues and shows direction.

When someone’s faith is wavering, the best thing we can do is show mercy and point them to Jesus. We all know what it’s like to doubt. The One who rescued each of us can rescue them, too.

Reflect:

  • How have others shown you mercy and grace during a time of doubt?
  • What’s one practical way you can show compassion and kindness to someone whose faith is wavering?
