Session 11

You are the light in the darkness

From Letters of Paul: 30-Day Bible Study

Remember the song “This Little Light of Mine”? Although simple, the song’s lyrics are packed with truth. When we find life in Christ, we are raised out of the darkness of our sinful state and become a light in an otherwise dark world.

Paul explains how this works in Ephesians 5:7-10, writing, “at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”

Jesus’ love illuminates a radically different way to live, transforming us and making us a light for others in the darkness. This transformation to children of light happens as we follow Jesus’ example and walk in step with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:7-10).

Think of it like leaving a dimly lit office on a bright, sunny day. When you step outside, your eyes take a minute to adjust to the brightness. That’s how radically Jesus’ love changes our view. As we grow in relationship with God, our eyes adjust and it’s hard to remember what life in the dark was like.

Evidence of our old selves — sexual impurity, greed, and coarse talk — disappear as Jesus’ love overflows from us. And the more we experience of His love, the more we are compelled to sacrifice for one another and to submit to one another.

We were made in God’s image and it’s Him that our hearts long for. When Psalm 11:7 says, “the upright shall behold His face,” it’s talking about you. Don’t hide your light or let Satan blow it out.

As you go about your day today, remember that you have received Christ’s love. Ever notice how someone in love has a glow about them? The glow that comes with remembering you’re Jesus’ beloved will be a light to everyone you meet.

Reflect:

  • How has your life changed as a result of God’s love?
  • What is one thing you can do this week to show Jesus’ love to someone else?
