Session 30

Why does time with Jesus matter?

From Mark: A 6-Week Devotional

In a world that constantly tells us we aren't doing enough and don't have enough, why would a person take time to be alone and pray? Why trade potentially productive time at home or the office to sit and meditate on the Bible? In Mark 1, Jesus retreats to a solitary place to meet with the Father, but is it important for us?

Taking time to pray and meditate on God's Word is incredibly important for us. It brings clarity to confusion. It gives us vision and direction when we feel hopeless or lost. Comforts us in sadness. Encourages us to move forward, and lovingly rebukes us when we stray. Through prayer and reading the Bible, we find the grace to walk away from sin and the power to overcome.

Jesus told us He is the vine, and we are the branches (John 15). If a branch on a plant isn't connected to the root system, it can't get any nutrients or sustenance to grow. People are the same way. We have to be connected to our power source — the all-knowing, always present Creator of the universe — in order to make it through each day.

How do you get to know your best friend? By spending time with him. Talking. Sharing your hopes and dreams, your fears and anxieties. Listening with an open heart. A true friend loves at all times, and Jesus is the best friend any of us could hope for. He is not only a listening ear, but He's a high priest making intercession on our behalf (Hebrews 7). He's the firstborn among many brothers and sisters (Romans 8:29). He went before us, showing the way, so that we might walk as He did on earth. Jesus cleared the path so we can be united with Him and the Father like they already are (John 17:20-23), in unhindered relationship and communication.

Reflect:

  • How consistently are you taking time to read the Bible every day?
  • What needs to change in your schedule so you can meet with God for 10 minutes every day?
