Session 1

Keep getting to know the Lord

From NewSpring at Home: A Study on Colossians

Scripture

“For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way...” - Colossians 1:9-10

Observation

Paul prays for the Holy Spirit to give the church understanding and wisdom so they can bear good spiritual fruit. He also encourages them to be thankful for the inheritance awaiting them in God’s kingdom.

Paul didn’t just pray for this church once. He says, “we have not stopped praying for you.”

God is in the business of rescuing and redeeming His people. He brings us out of darkness and sin then strengthens us with patience and endurance. God is serious about this relationship. He wants us to have everything we need to be faithful and joyful to the end.

That’s why Paul wants the Colossians, and us, to keep getting to know the Lord. As we do, we’ll find endless reasons to be thankful. We’ll be able to see what the Lord has done and what He is doing. And, we’ll grow more confident in His promises to come through for us.

Application

  • Write out a few things you are thankful for.
  • Next, write out a few things that you are asking God for.
  • How does the Lord’s faithfulness in the past encourage you to be hopeful for the future?

Prayer

God, thank You for all of the things You have done for me. Thank You for all the things You are doing behind the scenes. Thank You for all the things that are yet to come. Continue to fill me with Your Spirit so I can experience all the good things You have to offer. Give me wisdom and endurance to keep following you even when things get hard.
