Who you’re really submitting to

From NewSpring at Home: A Study on Colossians

Scripture

“...Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ...” - Colossians 3:23-24

Observation

Paul covers the whole hierarchy of human relationships in these verses. From children to parents, to spouses, to bosses, we all serve and are to submit to someone. 

The attitude we’re to take in those relationships is summarized in the second half of Colossians 3:24 — “you are serving the Lord Christ.” 

We are to humbly submit to and obey those with authority over us. When we obey other people, we are obeying God. That always brings Him glory, models Jesus’ humility to others, and makes for smoother relationships with others.

Jesus tells us “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). So even when submitting to others isn’t easy, we do it because we trust God to handle our concerns and meet our needs.   

Application

• Do you struggle to show respect to your parents, spouse, or boss? Do you find it difficult to serve and obey them? 
  
• Would your attitude change if you approached serving them like you were serving Jesus? How?

Prayer

Father, help me to remember I am serving you when I serve others because you tell us that service is how we show your love. Give me the humility I need today to serve and obey for your sake.
