Session 1

You never outgrow the Gospel

From NewSpring at Home: A Study on Colossians

Scripture

“We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing...” - Colossians 1:3-6

Observation

Many Christians think of the Gospel as a message for people who don’t yet know Jesus. But here, Paul commends the church for its continued growth in the Gospel.

The truth is that while non-believers need the Gospel to understand their sin and need for Jesus, believers need the Gospel for the very same reason.

A life centered on Jesus is a life centered on the Gospel. The more we get to know Jesus, the more aware we are of our sin, and the more grateful we are that Jesus made a way for us to overcome sin.

Learning to walk by the Spirit doesn’t come naturally. Following the Holy Spirit’s lead takes practice, and we don’t always get it right (Galatians 5:16-17). On those days, especially, what a gift it is to remember the forgiveness and right standing Jesus bought for us on the cross.

Application

  • What do you need forgiveness for today? The more we are honest about our sin the more we understand how much Jesus has done for us.
  • Confess your sin to the Lord, and ask for forgiveness. He will give it to you freely!

Prayer

Jesus, thank you for covering my sin, freeing me from the power of death, and giving me the power of the Holy Spirit. The Gospel is the best news that only gets better. Help me to remember that I, too, am a sinner in need of a Savior. Forgive me for ________________, and help me to follow your leading in every part of my life.
