Session 2

Unrivaled

From The Blessed Life

A couple weeks ago, we went on vacation to Folly Beach. My girls love digging huge pools in the wet sand. They are super social and end up inviting all of the nearby kids to join them in their efforts. This operation works best when the tide is going out. But every time we headed to the beach during our vacation, the tide was coming in.

Our first day out, we began to dig furiously as soon as we arrived, but I noticed the reach of the waves was advancing rather quickly. I turned from the water’s edge with a bucket of water, and a thought crossed my mind as a wave filled our pool and walls and sides began collapsing:

“But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Our pool was soon wrecked, but what a vivid picture of our lives when they are not built on Jesus. Life happens, and the walls and sides begin collapsing. There is a better way.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.”

Jesus is not our adult extracurricular activity. He is not a hobby. He is not a Facebook interest.  He is the Savior of the world, and we are wise to build our lives on Him. Let’s honor Him in every area of our lives because He is the unrivaled love of our lives. He trumps our spouses, our children, our jobs, our comfort, our security, our money and our preferences. Are you committed to building your life on His word?
