Session 20

I don’t want to be here anymore

From 1 Samuel: A 6-Week Devotional

“No, you can’t always get what you want. You can’t always get what you want. You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just might find, you get what you need!”

You may know these lyrics from the Rolling Stones song You Can’t Always Get What You Want. While the song rolls off the tongue easily, applying the lyrics can be difficult.

David was a warrior. David was anointed to be king. He probably did not see his next step as playing the lyre for Saul, but he was obedient. David was willing to grow where he was planted. He took the opportunity to be obedient in his current step and learn what he needed to learn to prepare for his next step.

We may be called to achieve great success, but we cannot be so focused on our future we become disobedient in the present.

In our lives, we may be called to achieve great success, but we cannot be so focused on our future we become disobedient in the present. Promotions and raises are partially based on potential, but we are not going to be considered unless we have produced results.

Galatians 6:9 says, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap harvest if we do not give up.”

Waiting for our time can be a big hurdle, but God calls us to not become weary. The harvest might come faster for others, but we serve a God that is faithful and worthy of our trust.

Reflect:

  • What is one way you can be faithful where you are to prepare for where you are going?
  • What is one way God’s faithfulness can reassure you, so you don’t become weary in your period of waiting?
