The long road to an overnight success

From 1 Samuel: A 6-Week Devotional

David was not an “overnight success.” The unknown shepherd laid the groundwork for his victory against Goliath long before the epic showdown that made him a legend.

Before defeating Goliath, David was tasked with tending sheep (1 Samuel 17:15). Hardly heroic, the assignment was mostly unremarkable. 

But David’s responsibilities required him to fend off bear and lion attacks. Each time, he was able to defend the sheep with God’s help (1 Samuel 17:34-36). Had David neglected his duties because they weren’t glamorous, he wouldn’t have been present when the predators attacked. 

Following God’s direction in the mundane moments prepared him for bigger challenges. Over time, David grew to trust God’s help so completely that he didn’t hesitate to believe God would give him victory over Goliath as well (1 Samuel 17:36-37). 

Too often we call on God only when a challenge is too big for us to handle on our own.

How often do we face situations we consider too trivial for God to be at work? Whether it’s our self-sufficiency or our busyness, too often we call on God only when a challenge is too big for us to handle on our own.

Our perspective shifts by inviting God to be involved with the details of our lives. Everyday obstacles become opportunities to see Him at work. 

When we experience God’s provision and protection in the small things, we learn to trust Him in everything. Then, when we face overwhelming trials, God’s past faithfulness can secure our hope in His present promises.

  • What are some examples of God’s faithfulness in your past?
  • Can you identify areas in your everyday life where you can ask God for help?
  • If you’re facing a major challenge right now, why not praise God for his past provision while trusting Him to come through again?
