Two Words To Help You Stop Losing Ground

From Hebrews: A 24-Day Devotional

Four months of intense training led to achievement and success as he crossed the finish line of his first half marathon. Two weeks later, without as much as a single 10-minute jog, he decides to run again. Suddenly, his legs are cramping and he’s sucking wind. How is it that 16 weeks of training could be lost completely in 14 days?

Maybe you can relate to the runner above when it comes to progressing in your walk with Christ. Maybe there was a time that you were maturing, taking next steps, hearing from God and experiencing spiritual growth, but lately you feel like you you’ve lost so much ground you can’t muster the energy to even read your Bible. The author of Hebrews compares new Christians to infants who need milk, but says in verse 14 that “solid food is for the mature.”

So how do we progress from infant to mature in our spiritual lives? Instead of being idle, be committed. In just two words, verse 14 gives us the key ingredients to growing spiritually: “constant use.” The Bible doesn’t say “periodic use” or “occasional use.” It says, “constant use.” If we’re not where we want to be spiritually, maybe it’s time we made a commitment to being consistent.

Reflect:

  • Has there ever been a time you were closer to God than you are right now? What have you allowed to become obstacles or distractions along the way?
  • Getting back on track mentally and spiritually is easier when you have someone to hold you accountable. Who is supporting you as you follow Jesus? Who can you reach out to today to help you take your next step?
